Westinghouse plans to construct 10 large nuclear reactors in the U.S. with construction set to begin by 2030, as announced by interim CEO Dan Sumner during a roundtable with President Donald Trump in Pittsburgh. Each AP1000 reactor developed by Westinghouse can generate enough electricity to power over 750,000 homes. Building all 10 reactors is expected to generate $75 billion in economic value across the U.S. and $6 billion specifically in Pennsylvania.

Sumner detailed this ambitious plan at a conference focused on energy and artificial intelligence at Carnegie Mellon University, where technology, energy, and financial leaders revealed more than $90 billion in investments targeting data centers and power infrastructure. This announcement aligns with President Trump's May executive orders aimed at quadrupling nuclear power output in the U.S. by 2050, including a mandate to have 10 nuclear plants under construction by that year and a significant overhaul of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's rules.

Despite a challenging nuclear industry history—highlighted by only two new reactors built in the last 30 years, both AP1000 models at Plant Vogtle in Georgia, which ran $18 billion over budget and seven years behind schedule—Westinghouse has resurfaced from bankruptcy in 2018. The company is now owned by Canadian uranium miner Cameco and Brookfield Asset Management.

Further cementing its forward-looking stance, Westinghouse announced a partnership with Google to leverage artificial intelligence for creating an efficient and repeatable construction process for the AP1000 reactors, signaling a technological edge in future nuclear power development.
