Meta’s Oversight Board ordered the removal of a Facebook post featuring an AI-manipulated video of Brazilian footballer Ronaldo Nazário promoting an online game, citing violations of Meta’s Community Standards on fraud and spam. Despite receiving multiple reports and appeals regarding the misleading nature of the video, Meta had failed to take action promptly, allowing it to garner over 600,000 views before removal efforts were finally initiated. This incident sheds light on the growing concerns surrounding AI-generated deepfakes being used to spread scams, misinformation, and fraudulent advertising on social media platforms.
Meta has been under fire for its inconsistent enforcement against celebrity deepfakes, with only specialized teams having the authority to remove such content. This has resulted in instances of underenforcement, prompting the Oversight Board to stress the importance of Meta applying its anti-fraud policies more diligently across its platform.
The issue of deepfake abuse has become so pressing that legislative measures have been introduced to address it. The Take It Down Act, a bipartisan initiative signed by President Trump, now requires platforms to remove non-consensual AI-generated intimate images within 48 hours in response to the proliferation of deepfake-related offenses.
This case underscores the broader challenge faced by tech platforms in navigating the complex landscape of content moderation transparency and the rapid evolution of AI-manipulated media. As deepfake technology continues to advance, it is crucial for companies like Meta to stay vigilant and proactive in combatting the spread of fraudulent and deceptive content.
