Elon Musk clarified that no formal deal has been signed between xAI and Telegram to integrate the Grok AI model, contradicting Telegram founder Pavel Durov’s announcement of a one-year partnership with $300 million in funding and revenue sharing.
Telegram is seeking new revenue streams to address over $1 billion in debt, stemming from bonds issued in 2021 and 2023, ahead of bond maturities next year. The proposed deal includes a $300 million investment and an equity stake from xAI, alongside sharing Grok subscription revenues sold through Telegram's platform.
Musk launched xAI and its Grok AI model to compete with other leading AI models like ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google Gemini. Integrating Grok into Telegram could greatly expand the AI’s reach beyond X’s approximately 600 million registered users.
Pavel Durov admitted that while there is an agreement in principle, formal contracts and timelines are still pending, leaving the partnership in a preliminary stage.
Additionally, Elon Musk marked the conclusion of his 130-day term as a special government employee at the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He expressed gratitude to former President Donald Trump for the appointment and reaffirmed his commitment to reducing federal spending.
