The Ethereum Foundation is refocusing its efforts on Layer 1 scalability and user experience improvements through a series of upcoming protocol upgrades, including Pectra, Fusaka, and Glamsterdam.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, is shifting exclusively to research and innovation, stepping away from daily operational responsibilities. This strategic move aims to accelerate breakthroughs in key areas such as zkVM development, RISC-V research, and privacy technologies.

The Foundation plans to leverage increased research contributions to bring some long-term projects forward, potentially delivering initiatives originally expected in three to five years within just one or two.

Community input and rigorous peer review remain vital in refining and validating new proposals, with an emphasis on open dialogue and the freedom to challenge ideas.

As Tomasz Stańczak, incoming co-director at the Ethereum Foundation, noted, the shift towards near-term goals is focused on addressing persistent user experience and scaling challenges within the Ethereum ecosystem. The transition supports enhanced Layer 1 performance alongside continued Layer 2 expansion.

This refocusing reflects a broader commitment to evolving Ethereum’s core mission while fostering innovation in its technical frontiers.
